Amazon UK and EU Disapprove Paid Reviews

Customer reviews are beneficial to both sellers and buyers if written genuinely.

They attract more customers to a seller's product and, at the same time, help customers make an intelligent buying decision.

However, when these reviews are used to satisfy a seller's interest more than a buyer's need, then they fail to serve their purpose.

That was the point of Amazon for updating their guidelines for their UK and EU marketplaces, which ban businesses from offering perks like discounted products or cash payments in exchange for product reviews.

Amazon's old guidelines allowed third-party sellers to give freebies or discounted products to customers who post reviews of their products, provided that the latter admit receiving incentives from the businesses which they wrote reviews for.

Since their updated community guidelines have been put into effect, Amazon UK and EU prohibit sellers on their marketplaces to have paid reviews without facilitating through the Amazon Vine program.

To find out how these works, read the Customer Review Guidelines thoroughly on the Amazon UK site.

What Counts as an Incentivised Review?

A customer review which was done in exchange for money, free product or any similar incentive is considered an incentivised or paid review.

Third-party sellers on Amazon will be violating the company's new policy and putting their Sellers account at risk if they do any of the following:

  • Provide a free or discounted product, gift card, rebate, cash payment or other compensation in exchange for the review.
  • Provide or withhold free or discounted products or other benefits in the future based on whether the customer writes a review.
  • Use a review service where reviewers' continued membership depends on writing reviews.
  • Use a review service where you can rate customers based on their reviews.
  • Use a review service where customers register their Amazon public profile so that you can monitor their reviews of your products.

Aside from violating Amazon's new review policy, posting paid customer reviews also violates the Federal Trade Commission Act.

It's worth noting, though, that the new policy of Amazon applies to all product categories except books, as they "allow the age-old practice of providing advance review copies of books".

What does the New Policy Allow?

In no way is Amazon trying to be boring and unadventurous with its updated policy.

The company's official press release states you are allowed to do the following anytime you wish:

  • Offer discounts that are generally available to all Amazon customers, such as Lighting Deals.
  • Give out free products at trade shows, conventions or other similar terms where you are unable to monitor whether the recipients write a review or provide or withhold any benefits based on whether a review is written or the content of the review.

Moreover, Amazon is doing you a big favor by allowing you to identify areas in your product which you need to improve based on honest customer reviews.

With paid reviews you will never be able to see that, only the illusion of perfection.

What do you think of Amazon UK's new policy on customer reviews?

Canon G10 review – New but not improved

This is the review I have been excited to write for months. I have read the rumors on the blogs about Canon discontinuing the G9 and all the new and improved features for the G10. I pre order the rig on Amazon and sure enough it delivered today October 3rd, 2008. With the excitement of a 10 year old I ripped open the box and unleashed the new toy.

That is where the excitement ended.

Being intimately familiar with the G9 I intuitively reached for the Video function of the G10 as I have heard about the new and improves DIGIC 4 chip and the ability of it to produce HD quality video on an SLR. How exciting to have better video!! Wait, what’s this, small video format and NO TIME LAPSE feature. WTF??? I pay $50 more and Canon drops features that turned me onto the G9 in the first place. WTF!!! I am pissed! Who was the genius at Canon that is living in a bat cave to loose sight of what makes the G9 wonderful in this new world of bloggin! Was the decision maker a frustrated SLR engineer that wanted to gets rocks off on a 14.7 megapixel CCD senor? Why even have the G10 at all. Other point and shoots are smaller and have a large enough meg for decent prints, the larger SLR have better quality and better everything so why go with this G10 product that has nothing more to offer than less noisy images in low light and a faster processing speed that is negligible to the end user any way. WTF??? The over under dial is handy and more convenient but come on guys, I can tweak that exposure on the back end in photoshop and the G9 over/under function wasn’t that horrible. Shit even the lens cover looks cheaper than the original G9 lens cover. I bet this one scratches the lens in its poor construction too. WTF? You could have at least made that better for $50.

The Kindle Fire

An Amazon Kindle Fire Review

The arrival of convenient computers has dawned to the world today at this age. With the rise of portable technology, everyone could access the internet at any time using cell phones and even checking their emails from there as well. Laptops have been compacted into touch screen devices. With this comes the rise of portable book readers. An item which is an example of this is the Amazon Kindle Fire.

Apple had been the first to launch any tablet device of its kind with the Apple iPad. The rest had followed suit but had become second to none to this device. Amazon’s new product stands par with this particular item, with a cheaper price tag too. This costs around $199 at most retailers running on Android OS.

Here are a few details you should look into to see the advantages and disadvantages Amazon’s new item has for its potential users. Surely, you could make use of these details if you are still unable to decide. For its price, no one can blame you to be skeptical but see the advantages and disadvantages you really get.

Superior Hardware – The product boasts a 1 GHz dual core processor, a 7 inch touch screen with IPS and a good reading resolution of 1024×600. Pretty good for a tablet of this price you might say. You also get free storage on Amazon’s cloud services and get 8 GB worth of internal memory. A battery life of 8 hours continuous reading or a fraction reduced when you are watching movies and using Wi-Fi continuously is really great.

Cloud Services – Mentioned above is the free use of Amazon’s cloud services. What is this exactly? Good deals for around 11,000 movies and thousands worth of books await you with this service. You only need to spend around 10 bucks apiece for each one. That is really a good selection and for its price, a good deal nonetheless.

Some disadvantages are what you should also take into consideration if you want to buy this product. Not all products are perfect so assess carefully if these work for you or not.

Google Updates – As Android has updates from Google itself, being not a true tablet for the Android platform, this tablet won’t take advantage of these updates. Only Amazon is the one able to provide the updates for its users. You would only be able to connect to the Amazon App Store only but not to the Android Market.

No Added Features – As a tool to make use of their cloud services, the item has no 3G technology on board, has no digital camera features and even a microphone. These may have been the reason for the low price. However, having no 3G capabilities may limit the use of the cloud services they opt to market.

While you may see there are some disadvantages that are grave for this product, nonetheless, using the Kindle Fire from Amazon is something worthwhile. Used for pure media consumption, you are assured of a good entertainment product alone. While it may not boast the best hardware, with the rise of the internet and all its services, you could enjoy this thoroughly with it.
